Laws Are A Reflection Of A Government’s Moral Beliefs
As I was reading through parts of the Old Testament, and in particular some of the laws God gave Israel, it made me think that God’s laws are a reflection of God’s morality. God’s law reflect who God is. God’s laws told Israel to treat people honestly, to be responsible for your actions and make restitution if you caused harm or injury to another person or their property. God’s law says to honor your parents and the elderly, to honor your spouse, and to honor the sanctity of life. God’s law does not go contrary to God’s person - He is holy, just and righteous and so is His law.
When we look at the laws that men have established we must understand the same concept is in place. The laws enacted by a government are a reflection of the moral beliefs of that government. The laws will allow acts that follow the government’s moral beliefs and disallow acts that are contrary to its moral beliefs. If a government does not believe in the sanctity of life, its laws will allow acts such as assisted suicide, abortion, etc.
What is the moral climate of a government? You will know by the laws it enacts.
“Without morals a republic cannot subsist any length of time; they therefore who are decrying the Christian religion, whose morality is so sublime & pure, [and] which denounces against the wicked eternal misery, and [which] insured to the good eternal happiness, are undermining the solid foundation of morals, the best security for the duration of free governments.” Charles Carroll, signer of the Declaration of Independence
