Church burning the new tea party?

Dec 15, 2008

In a country that is used to seeing peaceful protest and differences of opinion, church-burning has come to symbolize some of the worst times in United States history. Now, thanks to the dedicated efforts of civil rights leaders, such cowardly acts of domestic terrorism are a thing of the past…or so we thought.

Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska and former GOP vice presidential candidate, had to make a stop at Wasilla Bible Church where she and her family attend services. She was there to apologize for a Saturday morning fire in case it was “in any way connected to the undeserved negative attention the church has received” from her recent election run.

Perhaps even more alarming than the damages to the building of $1 million, is the fact that people were inside when the building was set ablaze. The congregation is no doubt more grateful that no one was injured. The church will be meeting at nearby Wasilla Middle School while the building is being repaired.

It’s disturbing, to say the least, that someone decided that Governor Palin’s church needed to be set on fire. There are numerous opportunities to send letters, to meet and discuss, and otherwise communicate with the governor if someone has a problem. What this writer feels is even more telling, is that someone thought it was OK to set the church on fire. The last time this country saw church burning in any large scale was leading up to and during the civil rights movement in the mid-20th century. Are conservatives and/or Christians being targeted for their beliefs?

Perhaps, but it isn’t immediately clear from this isolated incident. While it seems a little too coincidental that Sarah Palin’s church was lit up, it also doesn’t mean that the fires of protest are raging around the country. But Christians need to be aware that our country is on its way to religious persecution and humanism run rampant to be sure. This country was set up — one of the many reasons it was founded! – to be one of religious tolerance and freedom. Watch out for politicians who move away from the freedoms of our Constitution in favor of political correctness and popular sentiment. We need to return to those constitutional values soon, for everyone’s sake.

We are coming into some scary times, it wont be long until our pastors are persecuted and put in jail for what they preach. As Christians we need to stand up for our beliefs and be aware of bills that will take away our freedom of speech/religion. Christians need to stop sticking their heads in the sand to current events and ignorantly voting people to office without regard to how that vote will affect our pastors freedoms.

I know of Christians (who are against abortion) who voted for Obama without even caring or considering his stance on abortion or how his policies will affect our freedoms in the church. To some extent it is those Christians who are putting our pastors and our freedoms in danger!

Ok off my soap box. ..hehe..great article!
